1. Registration Now Open for CNU’s Transportation Summit,
Nov.
4-6,
2009
Registration is now open for CNU’s Transportation Summit 2009 in Portland, where experts from fields such as design, planning, and engineering will be coming together to discuss how cutting edge developments in multimodal transportation can positively affect our built environment.
Last year’s summit in Charlotte was a great success, and participants this year can expect to continue the well-informed discussion and debate as we move towards drafting a statement of principles for Sustainable Transportation Networks.
The summit is a three-day event that will include a working meeting, presentations from leading transportation officials, and hands-on tours. Tours will explore standout aspects of Portland’s pioneering transport network, such as its bike lanes, transit mall, and streetcars.

2. Ballot Brings LEED for Neighborhood Development One Crucial Step from Launch
CNU Members Encouraged to Vote on Rating System by September 17
The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) is requesting the input of its members on whether to approve the current version of LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) 2009 rating system.
After six years and many revisions, the nation's first system to rate and certify green neighborhoods is now at a point where the three partner organizations overseeing its creation — CNU, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) are each conducting votes to determine whether it is approved for public launch. CNU is asking its full membership to participate in this decision.
CNU's member ballot starts today, August 19, and will be conducted online at cnu.org/leednd for 30 days — closing Thursday, September 17. In order to take part in this electronic ballot, members must be a current CNU member and will need their CNU.org login.
3. Go Electronic, Go Green: Help CNU Save Paper and Money!
CNU members can now switch to an electronic New Urban News subscription to reduce paper waste and save CNU money. Going electronic will also ensure more of your member dues go toward our programs and initiatives instead of toward printing and mailing costs. Here's how you can switch to an electronic subscription online right now:
- Log in to your member account at http://www.cnu.org (if you forgot your login, visit http://www.cnu.org/user/password)
- On the My CNU page, click the Edit Account/Profile tab just below the menu bar
- Click the Member Contact Information link below the tabs
- Select the Electronic subscription option at the bottom of the page and the click the Submit button
Members can find PDFs of New Urban News on the My CNU page after logging in at CNU.org. CNU will also send email notifications when new issues are posted.
If you have any trouble switching online, you can also email CNU Membership Assistant Juantiki Jones at jjones@cnu.org to change your subscription -- just be sure to include the CNU member's name and email address.

4. CNU Welcomes New Initiatives
Submit Initiative Proposals by Sept. 4, 2009
Have a new idea for a CNU initiative? CNU members are at the forefront of advancing reforms to overcome obstacles to urbanism. From LEED for Neighborhood Development to the Walkable Urban Thoroughfares manual, New Urbanists have a long history of rolling up their sleeves to change conventional building practice in favor of more urban forms of development. As a member you are one of the movement’s strongest assets and we are looking for your ideas!
CNU has created a new submission process to help prioritize initiatives, add transparency of the process, and encourage more member-led ideas to become CNU endorsed initiatives. CNU welcomes submissions for initiatives from members on any topic, but especially those identified in the CNU 2007-2012 Strategic Plan.
5. Fire Code Proposals to Be Heard in Baltimore, Oct. 24-26
Be there, be heard
The Congress for the New Urbanism is proposing changes to the International Fire Code that will empower local fire code officials to be more flexible on street designs. These amendments, developed by new urbanists and fire marshals working cooperatively through CNU’s Emergency Response & Street Design Initiative, will be debated on the weekend of Oct. 24-26 at the International Code Council’s Annual Conference & Code Development Hearings in Baltimore, Md.

8. Form-Based Codes Institute: Webinar and Upcoming Trainings
Want to preserve or increase the quality of our communities? Because Form-Based Codes can require rather than recommend the vision elements that make for good urbanism, FBCs are being adopted at an ever increasing rate throughout the U.S. The mission of the Form-Based Codes Institute (FBCI) is "to advance the knowledge and use of, and develop standards for, Form-Based Codes as a method to achieve a community vision based on time-tested forms of urbanism." Perhaps the most important way FBCI advances knowledge and standards for FBCs is through its 3-course series, taught by nationally recognized practitioners.
