Witold Rybczynski Awarded National Building Museum's Scully Prize

The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) is proud to announce that CNU XV plenary speaker Witold Rybczynski will soon receive the prestigious Vincent J. Scully Prize given by the National Building Museum. On January 17th, 2007, acclaimed architect, author, professor, and scholar Witold Rybczynski will become the 8th recipient of the award. His name will be added to the list of other legendary past winners such as Jane Jacobs, Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, His Highness the Aga Khan, and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, Phyllis Lambert, and Vincent J. Scully himself. Rybczynski is recognized by CNU for his broad spectrum of knowledge and work that in so many ways parallels the goals of new urbanist development.

Rybczynski is presently the Martin and Margy Meyerson Professor of Urbanism at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design. His architectural criticisms can be found regularly in Slate online magazine, and he has published such books as Home (1986), the J. Anthony Lukas Prize-winning A Clearing in the Distance (1999), and a forthcoming book entitled Last Harvest which he will present at the Congress this May. Library Journal has called Rybczynski “one of the most original, accessible, and stimulating writers on architecture.”

The National Building Museum’s Vincent Scully Prize awards recipients for exceptional practice, scholarship, or criticism in urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, or historic preservation. The award was created on behalf of Vincent J. Scully, the Sterling Professor Emeritus of the history of art at Yale University and a distinguished visiting professor at the University of Miami. Scully’s excellence in teaching and scholarship has impacted the work of commendable architects and planners for more than forty years and helped promote a greater understanding of New Urbanism.

This award will be presented at the National Building Museum’s Museum Hall. The cost is $12 Museum for members and students, and $20 for non-members. Prepaid registration is required. Walk-in registration is based on availability.
