Download ( 0B)How essential is social diversity to a neighborhood? How far can New Urbanism – and CNU in particular – go in its quest to promote it? CNU XV in Philadelphia will tackle these questions with a number of opportunities to discuss CNU’s specific role in the provision of quality diverse housing, and to establish clear, measurable objectives and ways in which our Affordability Initiative can begin to advance them.
Opening Night Reception and Plenary
Join us as John Norquist introduces Elinor Bacon, urban policy expert and assistant HUD secretary during the Clinton administration, who will share thoughts on the legacy of her father, Edmund Bacon, who served as Executive Director of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission from 1949 to 1970. Ms. Bacon has been extremely influential in the original shaping of and the push for reauthorization of HOPE VI legislation, and her father’s work continues to define Philadelphia as we know it today.
Concurrent Sessions
On Friday May 18th, check out Emily Talen’s session “New Urbanism for All: Meeting the Affordability Challenge” from 9:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Panelists Elinor Bacon, Robert Fishman, and Eugenie Birch will discuss the recurring problem of affordability in planned communities as well as new urbanist innovations to create more socially inclusive neighborhoods.
In the afternoon, head to “Affordable Housing: The Vitality of Design” hosted by Neal Payton at 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.. Panel members including Michael Pyatok, Lawrence “Murphy” Antoine, and Andres Duany will speak to the challenge of integrating attractive design into an increased demand for affordable housing, and what this means for new urbanists. Join us in learning creative design innovations and financing vehicles to address these challenges, as well as where we can go from here!
