The Congress for the New Urbanism is honored to announce that one of the United States’ leading governors, Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell, will address attendees of the Fifteenth Congress for the New Urbanism at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2007 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. Gov. Rendell will lead off an evening plenary featuring those at the very forefront of efforts to make strong cities and towns the cornerstones of regional planning and smart growth strategies, with renowned planners Jonathan Barnett and Peter Calthorpe following him at the podium.
Now in his second term as the chief executive of the nation’s 6th-most-populous state, Gov. Rendell has made unprecedented and strategic investments that have energized Pennsylvania’s economy and revitalized its communities. In addition to signing Pennsylvania’s first comprehensive measure to substantially reform the local tax system, he has reconstituted the State Planning Board to recommend strategies for encouraging more effective governance and for coordinating growth and development among the state’s many small boroughs and townships. With State Transportation Secretary Allen Biehler, whom he appointed, Rendell has helped the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation advance context-sensitive solutions that enhance local livability as well as regional mobility. (Biehler will also participate in a CNU XV session on Thursday).
Just as his tenure as Mayor of Philadelphia from 1992 to 1999 established him as a leader in reviving and redeveloping cities in the face of great challenges, Gov. Rendell’s record of leading Pennsylvania to impressive job growth has helped establish him as one of the most sought-after figures in national discussions on how revitalized livable communities contribute to the economic success and environmental sustainability of states and the nation. "Of all the governors in America, he’s the one that understands the value of cities the best," said CNU President John Norquist, who served as Mayor of Milwaukee from 1988 to 2004. "His will leave the CNU audience with ideas to remember."
