Call for Ideas Now Open for CNU 17: Experiencing the New Urbanism: The Convenient Remedy CNU is looking for your input to make CNU 17 in Denver a success! In 2009, the Congress will focus on climate change, sustainability, and showing how New Urbanism is the convienient remedy to the inconvienient truth. We are looking for your ideas on session speakers, topics, and panels for CNU 17, June 10-13, 2009. We are especially looking for ideas on transportation, sustainability, myths and lessons of urbanism, implementation, urbanizing the horizontal city, and designing and investing in public infrastructure that creates value. New Urbanists, Fire Officials Join in Quest for Narrow Streets and Effective Emergency Response After years of often finding themselves on opposite sides of disagreements about street design approvals, new urbanists and members of the fire service gathered in Austin just before the start of CNU XVI and discovered they have more in common than many first thought. Twenty-five participants – fire marshals, civil and traffic engineers, planners, and researchers – discussed and debated the intricacies of urban street design and emergency response in a two-day workshop April 1-2. The workshop, "Smart Growth Streets and Emergency Response," was the first public step in a multi-year effort by CNU and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to reconcile the essential new urbanist need for narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets and the goal of emergency service providers for fast response times. CNU has opened a new door to learn more: The Emergency Response & Street Design Initiative page at CNU’s website. The page contains an overview of the project, a summary of the workshop’s key findings, links to its presentations and links to other resources, and contact information. 3. CNU XVI Archive Is Now Live After sorting through the hours of cutting-edge presentations from CNU XVI in Austin, CNU has completed its online archive of the Congress, available now at http://www.cnu.org/cnuxvi. The archive features blog coverage from the Congress, as well as over 60 presentations, many including audio or video. While there is no substitute for attending a Congress, the archive serves as a valuable educational resource for anyone interested in learning more about New Urbanism. 4. Examples of Accessibility at CNU.org CNU's Image Bank features numerous Examples of Visitability & Accessibility from several building types -- including detached houses, rowhouses, and small multifamily buildings. We invite our members to add more by uploading photos or drawings to the Image Bank (log in for access to upload). SmartCode News SmartCode v9.2 Model Code and Supplementary Modules Now Posted The 2008 SmartCode v9.2 upgrade and new Sustainability Modules are now posted
on SmartCode Central for free download. The Version 9.2 base code is further
streamlined from last year's v9 SmartCode Local Master Class June 18-20, Jamestown, RI Sandy Sorlien, a co-author of the SmartCode v9 and Manual, leads SmartCode Local, an intensive master class in SmartCode v9.0 calibration. The class is structured charrette-style for only 6 people. SmartCode Local is a hands-on, site-specific, three-day retreat, after which
participants will know how to analyze urbanism, complete a Synoptic Survey,
and calibrate the model SmartCode for local conditions. The beautiful Jamestown
village study area will be rich with great lessons, as a SmartCode charrette
was recently held there. Jamestown Town Planner Lisa Bryer and the charrette
leader, architect Don Powers, will join Sandy for instruction and discussion.

Because of the heavy teaching load the entry-level courses places on our faculty members -- who are also busy practioners like yourself -- we are only able to offer one or two of the advanced courses each year. June 12th and 13th we are offering FBC 201: Preparing the Code: Design Considerations in Fort Worth, Texas. We do not have another 201 course scheduled for this year. The course will provide 16.25 credits for AICP and AIA/CES.
