The LEED-ND Core Committee, a partnership between CNU, the US Green Building Council, and the Natural Resources Defense Council, has endorsed a new and improved version of the LEED-ND rating system. It resolves many concerns that New Urbanists have had about the pilot version of the rating system. The new version of the rating system will debut as the first official version in mid-2009, but you can get a peek at it when the first public comment period opens in November 2008. (USGBC committees will do a technical review of the rating system in the meantime.) CNU will be asking our members to give a final seal of approval for LEED-ND in a first-ever member ballot early in 2009.
The currently planned timeline for LEED-ND also includes two 45-day public comment periods -- the first around December 2008, the second around April 2009. CNU aims to brief our members about the rating system during the public comment periods and strongly encourages our members to give their feedback at those times. The "ballot draft" of the rating system will be submitted to CNU's members and Board of Directors for final approval (as well as USGBC's membership and NRDC) in mid-2009.
As of October, 12 LEED-ND pilot projects have successfully gained certification. To find out more about the pilot projects and LEED-ND in general, please visit www.cnu.org/leednd and USGBC's site.
