Cycling, transit advocate to speak on Nov. 6
One of New Urbanismís most celebrated Congressmen, Rep. Earl Blumenauer,
will speak at CNUís Transportation
Summit 2009, Nov. 4-6, in his hometown, Portland, Ore. Blumenauer,
a forceful advocate in Congress of livable communities and transportation
reform ñ including strong support for cycling, streetcars, and passenger rail ñ will
speak on the Summitís final day, Friday, Nov. 6. He is a co-sponsor of the
pending CLEAN TEA amendment to the climate bill, which now includes CNU-backed
language designating network connectivity enhancements as a proposed component
of clean transportation funding eligibility.
To register for the Summit and to see the draft agenda, visit http://www.cnu.org/transportation2009.
2. CNU Members Overwhelmingly Approve LEED-ND
Green neighborhood rating system endorsed in first-ever online member ballot
The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) requested the input of its members on whether to approve the current version of the LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) 2009 rating system. The online ballot was open for 30 days ó from August 19 to September 17, 2009 ó and members logged in to CNU.org to place their vote.
The results were overwhelmingly in favor of launching LEED-ND, 94 percent to 6 percent. Once the polls closed, the CNU board verified the vote and unanimously approved going forward with the launch.
ìThank you to all the members who weighed in on this important decision,î stated John Norquist. "Over the years, CNU members helped improve the system's ability to assess the degree to which projects embrace the principles of the Charter of the New Urbanism. The ballot result confirms their work.î All told, 249 or just under 10 percent of CNUís members voted, a number Norquist said represented a pretty favorable participation rate considering the level of detail in the rating system.

8. Form-Based Codes Institute: Webinar and Upcoming Trainings
Want to preserve or increase the quality of our communities?
Because Form-Based Codes can require rather than recommend the vision elements
that make for good urbanism, FBCs are being adopted at an ever increasing
rate throughout the U.S. The mission of the Form-Based Codes Institute (FBCI)
is "to
advance the knowledge and use of, and develop standards for, Form-Based Codes
as a method to achieve a community vision based on time-tested forms of urbanism." Perhaps
the most important way FBCI advances knowledge and standards for FBCs is
through its 3-course series, taught by nationally recognized practitioners.
