Developed as a standard of professional excellence in the design of the built environment, the CNU-Accreditation program seeks to elevate the practice of the principles of New Urbanism. Nearly 20% of CNU's membership currently holds CNU-A status, and the program was instrumental in the City of El Paso's recent success in adopting a new comprehensive plan. Mathew McElroy, CNU Board member and Deputy Director of Planning and Economic Development for the City of El Paso, has helped sign up more than 150 professionals for the CNU-A exam in El Paso alone. "If they want to work for the city, then they must have a project assigned CNU-A," McElroy told Better! Cities and Towns in an interview earlier this year.
Taking McElroy's advice for the exam "to evolve and get tougher, {and} focus more on streets," CNU and the University of Miami are excited to announce upcoming revisions to the CNU-Accreditation exam. Starting in the fall of 2012, the exam will now include street-focused material stemming from the work of CNU's Project for Transportation Reform Initiative. The exam will specifically incorporate material from The Sustainable Street Network Principles, a practical, inspirational and beautifully illustrated booklet that outlines the principles and key characteristics of the sustainable street network.
By including The Sustainable Street Network Principles in the recommended readings and exam, the CNU-A program is expanding to address all areas of New Urbanist practice and design that can help individuals and municipalities enact long-lasting, value-adding change in their communities.
Course and exam registration will be open from June 12 - July 10, 2012, with the next exam opening September 20 - October 4, 2012. For exam preparation, register for the University of Miami's self-paced online course, The Principles and Practice of New Urbanism, by visiting http://nuonline.arc.miami.edu/. This optional course provides preparation for the exam, and is formatted online to accommodate one's busy schedule.
