Dr. Clos will be presenting at the closing plenary with CNU founder Peter Calthorpe to talk about urbanism from a global perspective.
Under Dr. Clos' leadership, Un-Habitat recently launched the Medellín Collaboration on Urban Resilience, a new alliance between nine of the world’s largest UN and non-UN organizations to build urban resilience and to strengthen the social, economic and environmental fabric of the world’s urban spaces. Clos comes to the U.N. with an impressive resume - from 1997 to 2006, he was the Mayor of Barcelona.
One of Clos' most notable achievements as Mayor was designing and implementing the Barcelona22@ Project, turning the city's industrial district into a technology and innovation center. When the project is completed, it will bring 4 million square feet of new floor space to the city.
Dr. Clos graduated from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland with specializations in public health and epidemiology. In 1979, he was the Director of Public Health and influenced the creation of the General Health System law, which eventually led to the Spanish National Health System. He regenerated the Ciutat Vella (The Barcelona Downtown district) by implementing a series of comprehensive urban interventions.
More recently, Clos was Spain's Minister of Industry and Tourism and is currently serving as an Ambassador to the Republics of Turkey and Azerbaijan. Learn more about Dr. Joan Clos perspectives on international urbanism at the plenary on Saturday, June 7 from 10:30am-12:00pm.
