September 2014 Better Cities and Towns
In this issue, Rob Steuteville interviews Gary Heidel, Chief Placemaking Officer for the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) and the first and only official with that title in any state. Rob also jumps into the hot debate over streetcars, spurred by recent research suggesting that many new American streetcar systems are failing to attract riders. A piece from Kaid Benfield has also been attracting heated discussion with the suggestion that San Francisco, New York and DC are more affordable than we think due to the housing + transportation costs equation.
Also in this issue, Mark A. Wyckoff, FAICP, a professor at the Michigan State University Land Policy Institute, illuminates the “Four types of placemaking.”
