Professor Antwi Akom, Scholar of Equity and Sustainability, to Address CNU 23
San Francisco State University Professor Antwi Akom, a leading thinker on equity and sustainable development, will address the 23rd annual Congress for the New Urbanism in Dallas/Fort Worth, April 29-May 2. Dr. Akom, an associate professor of Environmental Sociology, Public Health, and Education, is an internationally recognized scholar and the co-founder of Institute for Sustainable Economic, Educational and Environmental Design, or I-SEEED.
As the executive director of I-SEEED, Dr. Akom promotes inclusive, community-driven placemaking in disadvantaged neighborhoods. His work helps expert practitioners contextualize urbanist issues locally and ensure that projects are driven by the needs of citizens and community institutions.
Additionally, Dr. Akom is a leading advocate for equity in sustainable development, working to ensure that green amenities and lifestyle choices are designed to be available to all members of a community. In his scholarly work, he has examined how sustainable placemaking can help to combat inequality and social stratification.
Dr. Akom also serves as Co-Director of the Educational Equity Initiative at the Cesar Chavez Public Policy Institute, and on the board of directors at EcoDistricts.
