As deadlines loom, the fight for Buffalo's waterfront escalates
While the New York State Transportation Department prepares to award construction contracts for an improvement of Buffalo's Route 5 elevated expressway, national and local groups have come together to fight the plan. The recently formed Waterfront Coalition, which includes members such as the Sierra Club, League of Women Voters, and the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier, aims to halt the process and boost the alternative plan, which calls for a waterfront boulevard which would beautify the area, reconnect the lakefront with the city, and spur a new age of development in the region. While the State Transportation Department is stuck in the 1960s Bob Moses mindset, the Coalition, supported by CNU, is working hard to propel Buffalo into the 21st Century.
