Submitted by Joe Menard on Wed, 02/27/2008 - 3:16pm
Despite rampant decay and population loss only fifteen years ago, Providence, RI today stands as a model for Downtown redevelopment among rustbelt cities. Local developer Arnold B. "Buff" Chace has helped lead Downcity Providence become a place of energy and value. Since buying vacant buildings in the early 1990s - and redeveloping them - Downcity Providence now has residential lofts, restaurants, cafes, and art organizations. CNU co-founder Andres Duany also helped the city's transformation by creating a master plan in 1994. Chace and others continue to try and attract people to Downcity, but face some obstacles in the process.
