Sustainable Urbanism: Stapleton, CO Featured in WSJ
Shelly Banjo's piece in the Wall Street Journal focuses on new communities that strive to be 'green' and reduce sprawl. Banjo categorizes three movements - new urbanism, smart growth, and eco villages as varying approaches to acheiving a similar goal. The notion of sustainable urbanism, which emcompasses ideas from all three movements, and written about by Doug Farr in his recent book, is perhaps the greenest way of acheiving density, lessening automobile use, and preserving nature. The new urbanist community of Stapleton, CO is used as a good example of sustainable urbanism because it embodies new urbanist design principles, eco-friendly infrasturture (including storm water treatment) - all within the bounaries of a greyfield site.
