Camden's riverfront prison yields to redevelopment. 6/18 Update. Officially empty. Last Inmate Gone
Camden's Riverfront State Prison,as of yesterday, had exactly 30 inmates - down from 1,100 last year. In January, Gov. Corzine ordered it shut as part of the latest effort to entice money, housing, and jobs to the waterfront of the impoverished city. The 25-year-old Riverfront State Prison, on prime real estate along the Camden waterfront, is set to close its doors. After all the inmates have been relocated, the facility is to be razed to make way for redevelopment projects designed to bring money, housing, and jobs to the city.
