Sustainble house in sustainable place : Urban net zero energy home by Farr Associates

This morning's Chicago Tribune has a piece on a green-built house that is noteworthy because it is ultra-sustainable both when considered in isolation and in context of its surroundings. The net zero energy house, designed by Jonathan Boyer at Farr Associates, is built to produce as much or more energy than it consumes. But as Victor Dover pointed out at the CNU 17 opening plenary, a sustainably constructed building is superfluous if it's not built in a place amenable to walkable urban living. However, this home fulfills both criteria, located as it is on Chicago's North Side a few blocks away from the Brown Line, Red Line, and Metra trains. Of course, this type of truly green urban development is exactly why LEED-ND is being developed.

Doug Farr, founding principal of Farr Associates and author of Sustainable Urbanism, has been deeply involved with the LEED-ND development process. Here's a great video of him discussing how neighborhood design is really the next frontier when it comes to green building:
