Neighbors in Los Angeles Advocate for Better Urban Design for Proposed Grocery Store
Local residents are fighting a proposed grocery store design along a pedestrian district of Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles. The store, proposed by the supermarket chain Fresh & Easy, would include a large, 250' by 160' surface parking lot that would break up the pedestrian realm and go against the Specific Plan for that portion of the Boulevard, which encourages high-quality pedestrian development and parking hidden from the street.
The neighborhood is not against Fresh & Easy, but does oppose the design that includes such extensive surface parking. Fresh & Easy is demonstrating sensitivity to urban context in other locations, including a store planned to open in early 2011 in San Francisco, and it is the hope of CNU that Fresh & Easy can work with the neighborhood groups along Crenshaw to arrive at a better solution.
Linda Ricks, chair of the Crenshaw/Slauson CAC and a member of the Hyde Park Organizational Partnership for Empowerment (HOPE), encourages residents of Los Angeles to call the mayor's office at (213) 978-0600 or the City Council's Land Use Committee Chair, Ed Reyes (213) 485-8907, and to attend the City Council hearing on December 8 at 10AM.
