Norman Garrick to give lecture in Dortmund, Germany

Norman Garrick, CNU Board Member, associate professor of civil engineering at the University of Connecticut and director of UCONN’s new Center for Smart Transportation, is scheduled to headline a lecture series sponsored by the Institut fur Stadtbaukunst and the Technische Universitat Dortmund.  Garrick specializes in the planning and design of urban transportation systems, including transit, streets and highways, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities.  As co-chair of the Transportation Task Force, he has been an essential member of the CNU/ITE urban thoroughfares project.

By incorporating discussions with architects, engineers, economists, sociologists, political scientists, traffic engineers, lawyers, and historians, the Dortmund series will address some of the central questions of contemporary urban architecture:

-What is lacking in cities today?

-What should urban architecture look like?

-How can a city achieve a durable, beautiful, and liveable urban environment?

The series will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first Department of Urban Planning, Settlement, and Housing by Joseph Brix and Felix Genzmer, professors at the Technische Hochschule Berlin-Charlottenburg.  This department and its "urban design presentations" from 1908 to 1920 created a model for the field of urban design as a collaborative and multi-faceted discipline.

Garrick's lecture will kick-off the series at 2 pm on December 9, 2011.
