Recently Ken Sides posted on the Roundabout@listserve.ksu.edu that he was impressed with CNU's new Sustainable Street Network Principles and suggested that CNU generate principles for Roundabouts.
Here is my quick take, first draft on principles for Roundabouts:
1. They should be small.
2. Lanes should be narrow and turning radii tight enough to discourage dangerous speeds, but wide enough to allow buses to fit.
3. They shouldn't have to be round. A plain intersection of two streets with no stop signs or lights and a little monument in the middle of the intersection can function as a roundabout.
4. They should never involve demolition of existing buildings.
5. Sidewalks must be included.
