Henry Cisneros and Independent for Life
Henry Cisneros, the former secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), will be signing copies of his new book,Independent for Life: Homes and Neighborhoods for an Aging America, as well as delivering the keynote address at the upcoming Designing Homes and Neighborhoods for an Aging Population event.
The question of which policies and design strategies will be most effective in providing safe, accessible, and affording houses and communities to seniors will be the focus of the meeting, and will house a number of professionals and practitioners from various disciplines to discuss this pressing issue that will affect one-fifth of the population of the United States by 2030.
Independent for Life is a compendium of innovative ideas and strategies to help facilitate an efficient means of housing for the country's seniors. Included are various case studies that show exactly how the policy was conceptualized, proposed, and ultimately implemented. Cisneros promotes various techniques in order to ensure success: retrofitting existing neighborhoods, linking corridors, and working with policymakers at the local, state, and national level to cover all grounds of the project.
The Designing Homes and Neighborhoods for an Aging Population event - to be hosted at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. April 26th, 2012- will qualify all attendees for Continuing Education Credits; more information can be found here.
