Lincoln Rides Above the Rest in the “Get Up & Ride” National Bike Challenge

As the prices of gas skyrocket and a sustainable lifestyle is ever so important to adopt, alternative forms of transportation are key in our society, although sometimes a challenge to implement. Lincoln has stepped up to this challenge however, and truly exhibited how urban planning, paired with branding techniques, can create a buzz as well as reflect changing lifestyles within a city.
As of eight years ago, Lincoln’s biking community was virtually non-existent, however since, Lincoln has rode its way to the top. This rise to excellence is a direct result of Lincoln’s development of over 131 miles of trails as well as downtown bike lines rivaling the likes of cycling powerhouses nationwide. As our system of bike trails have become even more popular for recreational users and commuters alike, in 2012 Lincoln chose to participate in the “Get Up & Ride” national bike challenge.
This program encourages people to bike for both commuting and recreational purposes. In doing so, they ask citizens to log as many miles as possible for their community; the results for the community of Lincoln were astounding.
The League of American Bicyclists, a cycling advocacy organization, dubbed Lincoln a bike-friendly community making it one of 214 nationwide. The city received recognition to its commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in promotion, education, infrastructure and policies. Lincoln ranked 4th nationally in the community competition with 70,000 miles completed, a feat that is within the ranks of major cycling communities within the nation. These results truly highlight Lincoln as a top notch cycling community revealing how the community embodies sustainable lifestyles.
This challenge has created an obvious impact within the city and as the challenge begins to heat up again for the summer months of 2013, Lincoln is ranked 3rd in participation. This is a direct reflection of how the creation of smart infrastructure and the proper marketing can motivate a community; adopting sustainable practices.
