The Greater New Orleans Foundation’s Metropolitan Opportunities Fund Awards CNU a $50,000 Grant for Continued Study on Claiborne Corridor

CNU is proud to announce it has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s Metropolitan Opportunities Fund.
Building on the momentum of last year’s successful introduction of the Highways-to-Boulevards Initiative to the Crescent City, the Greater New Orleans Foundation award will enable CNU to continue strategizing for a revitalized North Claiborne Avenue and the replacement of the aging Claiborne Expressway/Interstate-10. Working closely with the Claiborne Corridor Improvement Coalition, a neighborhood organization formed out of the NEWCITY Neighborhood Partnership, CNU will continue to educate community members, inform stakeholders, and foster further support for its efforts among a broad array of constituents, such as residents of the Tremé/ Lafitte and Tulane/ Gravier neighborhoods, business owners, and regional and state policy makers. By illustrating the economic, environmental, health, and transportation benefits of removing I-10, CNU and its partners will prove that walkable boulevards — and not elevated highways that isolate communities— are key to improving transportation, employment and economic outcomes for residents.
As CNU President & CEO John Norquist, who brings expertise and experience to the issue when he removed the Park East Freeway while Mayor of Milwaukee, stated, “Thanks to the Greater New Orleans Foundation, and the continued support of the Ford Foundation and the National Endowment of the Arts, this empowers CNU to continue to work with our partners and neighborhood organizations to revitalize the Claiborne Corridor. Local support is building to remove the freeway and bring back one of New Orleans’ most elegant avenues.”
With the support from Metropolitan Opportunities Fund at the Greater New Orleans Foundation, CNU excitedly moves forward in encouraging the removal of I-10. Together with the Claiborne Corridor Improvement Coalition, and with increasing support from New Orleanians across the city, CNU anticipates a grand future for a restored and vibrant North Claiborne Avenue.
