Tempe, AZ, 85281: Recently, Students for the New Urbanism @ ASU participated in the worldwide Park(ing) Day 2013 in their hometown of Tempe. They fed the meter for three parking spaces and turned them into parklets until the meter ran out. While a similar event was taking place (with Mayor Greg Stanton's attendance) in downtown Phoenix, City of Tempe officials did not approve of the urban intervention. City officials and police officers cited a zoning ordinance requiring a permit for a gathering in a public space, and asked the students to pack up and leave. Despite the resistance, the students learned a great deal of how to use downtown public space and how different municipalities respond to new urbanist ideas and events such as Park(ing) Day
