Downtown Cotati Specific Plan
Location: Cotati, CA. Small historic city in Somoma Co., Ca.
Established in 1963 and dating from 1877, the 7,500 person city of Cotati is revitalizing its downtown through a charrette-led Specific Plan and form-based code that articulates historically-sensitive restoration and new development into its 54-acre, 28-block downtown. A total of 350,000 square feet of commercial space and 530 dwellings are enabled through the four-zone plan which employs nine different building types, eight street types and four open space types. Central to this effort is the reclaiming of La Plaza Park. This historic public space will be transformed from its current role as primarily a regional traffic device back into the substantial and noticeable community focus it was intended to be, serving to regenerate the public realm long ago lost to the automobile. The reconfigured Plaza Park will appropriately become the centerpiece of Cotati as the active and people-oriented place that links the historic core to the south and the new uptown area to the north along Old Redwood Highway.
