HERRYFORD VILLAGE, FORT BELVOIR
Location: Fort Belvoir, VA United States. An urbanized military base.
Herryford Village is the first new residential neighborhood created as part of a 50-year public/private partnership that is redefining military housing at Fort Belvoir. As part of the larger project, 170 historic homes are being renovated, while more than 1600 homes will be replaced with 2070 new residences in 12 new walkable, interconnected villages. At Herryford Village, a range of housing types accommodate a variety of families, and each home is a five-minute walk from a community center, picnic shelters and playgrounds. An existing cross street within the village becomes "Main Street," linking retail uses (with family housing above) to the new housing. The strong community bonds that are fostered in Herryford Village provide a measure of reassurance to soldiers on deployment who are concerned about their families left at home.
