Manatee Pocket Gateway

Location: Port Salerno, FL, 34992, USA. waterfront

The Manatee Pocket Gateway is a pedestrian plaza overlooking the Manatee Pocket. The project includes stingray-shaped shade structures, benches, lighted bollards that replicate light houses, and pedestals and pavers inlaid with fish. An artistic railing depicting swimming manatees serves as the signature piece of the project. The railing was created by local artist Sue Lampert in partnership with the Arts in Public Places program. The Gateway project has significantly improved the aesthetics and view along the waterfront - which was formerly blocked by on-street parking stalls and a concrete barrier. In addition, adjacent business owners at Manatee Island Grill saw a more than 25% increase in sales upon project installation. The project provided direct pedestrian access to their business off of A1A/Dixie Highway. The investment of public dollars spurred this business to partner with the CRA in completing future phases of the Manatee Pocket Walk boardwalk. This project will connect to the Pocket Walk Phase IV. The Gateway project is a prime example of the CRA’s context sensitive approach to redevelopment. The design both celebrates and aligns with Port Salerno’s identity as a waterfront community.
