MISSION MERIDIAN VILLAGE
Location: South Pasadena, CA United States. Mixed-use, transit-oriented development
This innovative transit-oriented development gently builds densities near a new South Pasadena rail stop in a way that respects the neighborhood pattern, transitioning from mixed-use lofts and retail space to lower-scale residential courtyards and bungalows. The building, which replaces a 20-year-old lot, is meant to mesh with the traditional architecture of the area, which blends mercantile and arts-and-crafts influences. The building is consistent with New Urbanist standards for walkable neighborhoods. With public living areas that face outwards it functions as an “eye on the street.” The varying typologies encourage occupants of different incomes to live in the same area. All of these principles were explained to the community which eventually approved the plans.
