THE ROBERT REDFORD BUILDING FOR THE NRDC
Location: Santa Monica, CA United States. Robert Redford Building
One of the greenest buildings in the United States, this renovated office building is a model synthesis of the principles of New Urbanism and sustainability. Environmental features include “recycling” of an existing building, rooftop photovoltaic cells, harvested rainwater, and gray water, shower facilities for bicycle commuters, Energy Star equipment, ventilated light wells that recall California lighthouses, and more. Urbanistically, the front of the building addresses the street with a flush face and a retail use, an environmental learning and activism center. The rear of the building opens up to the sea breezes with more pavilionated massing, relating to neighboring houses. The Redford Building links itself to its surrounding metaphorically and environmentally.
