Why I Attend the Congress | Henry Cisneros

It's no secret that the annual Congress for the New Urbanism is the leading venue for New Urbanist education, collaboration and networking. Every year, the top minds and practitioners from around the globe travel to the CNU event to engage with the ideas that give shape and meaning to the communities we inhabit. By congregating a diverse collection of thought-leaders, planners, architects, academics, government officials, students, and citizen-activists, CNU creates a community for the design of ideas, and readies them for application.

Why I Attend the Congress is a series dedicated to sharing the first-hand experience and insight gained from attending the yearly event. The following contribution comes direct from Henry Cisneros, the Executive Chairman of the CityView companies.

 

I am pleased to present at this year’s Congress for New Urbanism as the organization shares my mission of creating vital and healthy communities for Americans. Not only that, but CNU is also focused on what we at CityView have prioritized – smart urbanist development that revitalizes our metropolitan centers with a mixture of spaces and functions including affordable housing, viable transportation and infrastructure, and the awareness and implementation of improved energy solutions for a healthier planet and reduced costs.

As you know, many of our cherished baby boomers are retiring and the number of aging Americans is unprecedented. Many of our elders desire to live in their homes as long as possible, however those homes were designed and built for yesterday’s demographics. Our homes and communities must be adapted, or new ones built, to accommodate the aging population that wishes to function actively, though at a slower pace, with less acuity, vision and physical strength.

This changing landscape poses many challenges for our communities. Planners and developers must consider the desire of our older population to remain as long as possible in their homes, many of which are in infill, centralized locations. We must consider transportation and services in these locations to support the aging as well as create financial strategies to address these new considerations. I look forward to engaging with the CNU and its attendees on this unique challenge that we face so that we may together create viable communities that address the unique needs of our cherished older generation.
