Charlotte residents in awe of new light rail line

Charlotte's Lynx Blue Line opened on Saturday, November 24, as thousands gathered to ride the city's new light rail line. While residents enjoyed a free ride over the weekend, they soon will pay a reasonable $1.30 fare. The 9.6 mile Lynx Blue Line includes 15 stops. Serious plans are already in the works to expand its length 11 miles by 2013.
While the enthusiasm of Charlotte's residents is promising, the true gauge of a successful Charlotte transit system will come not only when we see how many residents use the system, but in the next few years when residents and local officials will decide on future light rail projects that will surely add value to Charlotte. With great timing, CNU's 2008 Transportation Summit in Charlotte should only build on this transit renaissance in the Queen City.

Ridership healthy so far
I took some photos along the line on 26 November, its first revenue day in service. Ridership estimates for the first week show that it's well on track to achieve its first year ridership goals -- especially as the many under-construction buildings lining the route welcome new residents and businesses.
