Transportation for America has issued a call for answers on how the presidential candidates plan to address transportation issues. Sign on before 1:00 p.m. EST tomorrow and your petition will be delivered to campaign representatives before the debate.

    America's transportation system is half a century behind—causing unnecessary pollution, expense, and congestion.

    We need our next president to lead an initiative to invest in public transit, high-speed trains, places to bike and walk, and green innovation. We need a president with a plan to strengthen our economy, create jobs, reduce our dependence on oil, and make it easier for Americans to find the money to meet their growing transportation needs.

    Fill out the fields below to urge John McCain and Barack Obama to discuss their plans to build a 21st Century transportation system in their remarks at the final presidential debate.

We need a president with a plan that can put millions to work in jobs that can’t be outsourced, bring down the costs of travel, and create a sustainable infrastructure that will keep America on the cutting edge.

A Long Time Coming

It is really impressive how the presidential candidates have not discussed this issue already. Vague nicities about needing to ween ourselves off foreign oil don't add anything to the debate. It is serious discussion over the future of this nation's infrastructure that can help decrease our reliance on all fossil fuels, not just foreign sources! This is important, relevant, and of course, a long time coming.

3rd debate a disappointment

Even in the last debate, all I heard from either candidate was the usual "party line" about more fuel efficient cars. As always, if you want boldness or innovation you're going to have to look at the state and local levels.

Well, Barack Obama mentions roads, bridges, and highways a lot when talking about reinvesting in infrastructure to get our economy moving -- and certainly some road projects would be welcome, such as those that turn placeless highways and arterials into neighborhood-supporting boulevards and avenues. But Obama will likely boost transit funding, even shift the mix more towards transit (where many networks remain unfinished) from highways (where systems are mature), but he just doesn't have space within his necessarily tight message right now to explain how this seemingly "urban" position would benefit the country as a whole.

And as for John McCain, his transportation policy seems to be about what you'd expect from someone who represents a state whose travel magazine is called Arizona Highways, but hey, Arizona is changing. As the Arizona Republic reports, New urbanism in the walkable downtown Tempe being about the only place in Arizona where there's any excitement in the real estate market. It's sure to be a Grand Canyon State bellwether.
