Tell the US Green Building Council How It Can Improve LEED Certification System

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is in the process of updating its green building rating systems including LEED-ND  and is encouraging public comments. The public comment period is closing this Wednesday, September 14.

CNU is urging its members to review proposed changes to LEED guidelines and submit comments. Head to the USGBC website to weigh in with your comments on how the LEED rating systems can be improved.

LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND), originally developed under a partnership between the CNU, USGBC and the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC), is slated for a major structural change, but the content will remain largely the same.  In the current USGBC guideline draft, LEED-ND will be split into two separate rating systems. LEED for Neighborhood Development Plan will provide certification for entitled plans and approval for conceptual plans, while LEED for Neighborhood Development will certify completed projects.

Other notable changes to LEED-ND guidelines include:

  • A split of the Bicycle Network and Storage Credit into two sections that address on-site bicycle facilities/storage and connection to an external bicycle network.
  • Change in wording that simplifies calculations found in the rating systems for the Walkable Streets Prerequisite and the Connected and Open Community Prerequisite.
  • Update to Rainwater Management Credit to correspond with the credit for LEED for New Construction.

While LEED-ND is a core initiative of CNU, members should be sure to check the proposed revisions of the other rating systems too and think about how they can better incorporate the ideals of CNU’s other ongoing initiatives. How can new construction better incorporate public transit and bicycle networks to be more in line with our Transportation Networks Initiative? What could the USGBC learn from our Walkable Urban Thouroughfare Initiative to improve its rating system for Sustainable Sites?
