Grade-Separated Highway Makes Way for Complete Street in West Sacramento

The City of West Sacramento is celebrating the completion of their Tower Bridge Gateway Modification Project--another victory for champions of the Highways to Boulevards movement everywhere. The second and final phase of this project saw the eastern end of former State Route 275 reconfigured with two new, narrower, at-grade intersections, wider sidewalks, bicycle lines defined with green paint, and dedicated street car lanes to reinforce the urban scale, mixed-use environment of the surrounding neighborhoods.

The project creates a more appealing entrance to the city and establishes pedestrian-friendly linkages between the West Sacramento Civic Center, the Washington and Bridge Districts, and across the river to downtown Sacramento.

City officials are hopeful that this investment in human-scaled transportation can spur infill development along the corridor. Reconstruction has been a priority due to that infill potential and the strategic location of the site along the riverfront, just a 5 minute walk to downtown and the State Capitol.

Some key features of the redevelopment pertaining to transit and active transportation are:

  • Addition of 6-foot wide bicycle lanes on each side of the Tower Bridge Gateway
  • Dedicated streetcar lane on eastbound Tower Bridge Gateway between Fifth and Third Street; reserved right of way for streetcar and boarding area on westbound side.
  • Accommodation of conceptual plans for future streetcar movement and station on Third Street, south of Tower Bridge Gateway.
  • Addition of 20-foot wide landscaped sidewalks.
  • Construction of bus stops with shelters.

CNU applauds West Sacramento in this major step towards decreasing auto-dependency and creating more vibrant urban space in their city.
