Norquist: "Don't Wreck Sydney Hih"

The Sydney Hih buildings are located in northern downtown Milwaukee. The buildings were erected in 1876 and later purchased by attorney Sydney Eisenberg, who planned was to create an artist community. Throughout its history, the set of buildings have been home to a multitude of artists.

At the last city council meeting, the majority voted to wreck the buildings. However, Ald. Bauman convinced the council to vote again at the next city council- today, July 24th. There are no current plans for the use of the land after the buildings are demolished.

As former mayor or Milwaukee, Norquist knows the pattern of 'redevelopment' Milwaukee has used in the past...and the success rate of this style. He notes the empty block at 4th & Wisconsin and others; the 4th & Wisconsin buildings were demolished to make way for an expansion of Grand Avenue. Prior to this 'urban renewal tactic,' the block included the Randolph Hotel, restaurants, a movie theater, and a mix of other uses. The plans for the expansion fell through, and the block now sits there empty.

Norquist asks for Sydney Hih to be kept and the allowance of an adaptive reuse plan to purchase and restore the buildings.
