Student Leadership Chronicles: SNU membership gives former member a leg up when interviewing!
STUDENT LEADER CHRONICLES profiles how a Students for the New Urbanism membership enhances leadership skills.
The below post is a Student Leader Chronicles post on leadership and Students for the New Urbanism courtesy of CNU Program Intern Ryan Forst.
Michael Janicki is positive that his Students for the New Urbanism (SNU) leadership role secured him his current job in construction management! During his job interview, he was readily able to share his many experiences that come with SNU involvement. Not surprisingly, his future employer sought the specific skills Michael gained like his aptitude to coordinate people and his ability to deliver a project on time and on budget. Also, he credits the exposure he gained to the professional community during his time in SNU for allowing him feel comfortable with his industry’s leaders.
That said, Michael fondly looks back at his time in SNU, and he recalls that the most gratifying part of his SNU participation was turning New Urbanism naysayers into true believers. He comments, “Our peers and faculty members challenged us about the role of New Urbanism in our contemporary architecture context… however, we were confident that if we provided the real information about what New Urbanism actually is and how it applied to the modern built environment people would latch on to our beliefs!” He proudly reflects that his fellow New Urbanist and he were right!
You too can be like Michael and build the leadership skills employers’ want! For more information on Students for the New Urbanism or how to start your own chapter contact Caitlin Ghoshal. Also, make sure to visit the Students for the New Urbanism webpage!
The author thanks Michael Janicki for his help and participation. Michael is a recent University of Minnesota graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Certificate in Construction Management. Besides his current job, he keeps busy by pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies. He plans to complete this degree next May. During his time in Students for the New Urbanism he served as President, and he was directly responsible for administration duties.
