Dispatches from The Just City: A Ford Forum on Metropolitan Opportunity

Yesterday, New York City played host to the Ford Foundation's The Just City: A Ford Forum on Metropolitan Opportunity. The event brought together urban-minded leaders such as Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, the Brookings Institute's Bruce Katz, HUD Director Shaun Donovan, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, CNU Board Member Ellen Dunham-Jones, and many other luminaries. Setting out to tackle "how fairness, opportunity and equity can serve as the defining features of this new era of urbanization," the speakers and sessions concerned themselves with finding solutions on how to unleash and capture all of the economic and societal potential within -  and already emerging from - our great urban areas.

Ben Adler, one of the many writers who live blogged the event for Next American City , wrote about Shaun Donovan's desire for US cities "to connect to value creation," noting how the investment in public spaces, such as New York's Central Park, can help build and retain economic value. Anne Schwieger also wrote about "Finding an Economic Case for the City," while other writers like Quilian Riano made note of Bruce Katz's analysis of the post-recession functionality of cities. "All Wal-Marts and McDonald’s looked and functioned mostly alike. The new economy, Katz argues, will function differently - fusing interactivity and global desires with local needs," Riano wrote.
