Location: New York City, NY United States. 11 historic warehouses in the South Street Seaport Historic District.
The project restored 11 historic warehouses and built three new buildings on empty lots in the South Street Seaport Historic District.
Historic Front Street is mixed-use infill that restores an entire block of landmark buildings in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge in the South Street Seaport Historic District. Through the project, 11 historic warehouses have been restored and three new, modern buildings have been artfully inserted using contemporary architectural language that respects the neighborhood pattern and references historic features. The restoration work has preserved 200 years of use while employing green design principles.

Just getting better
The South Street Seaport festival marketplace ends abruptly at this little bit of stylish but real urban repair. On the other side, neighbors are petitioning the city to move forward with a plan to close Peck Slip, a broad cobblestone plaza-turned-parking lot just north of the site (probably a filled-in boat slip), and convert it to a proper square. Although the apartments have rented quickly, the retail spaces have been a bit slower, perhaps due to their small sizes.
