The following is a guest post from Anstress Farwell of New Haven, CT. Farwell is the President of the New Haven Urban Design League and has been involved with plans to revive downtown New Haven by removing the Oak Street Connector. Read below for more:

New Haven is a powerhouse of dreamers and doers in the planning world. Local groups have advocated since 2004 for the removal of the Oak Street Connector, a highway stub that lays waste to 10 acres of downtown land and divides the core of the city. In 2008, CNU President John Norquist helped boost the effort when he visited New Haven to speak about the benefits of urban highway removal and met with city officials and community stakeholders. So when the 30% engineering plans presented recently by the City fell short of community expectations, the response was vehement, yet constructive. An article posted on the plans generated a mountain of comments on how to improve the plan and live up to the TIGER II mandate for transportation innovation and excellence in planning:

Community groups and stakeholders have joined to establish the Route 34 Coalition, which plans to sponsor a design workshop, and is continuing to meet with public officials to offer alternate plans. The Coalition has set up a Google Group as a means of sharing information and coordinating advocacy efforts. Many CNU members toured the Downtown Crossing area this spring when New Haven hosted the CNU New England conference.
