CNU 20 Speaker Richard Florida on "Why Cities Matter"

CNU 20 speaker Richard Florida is one on the main minds behind The Atlantic's The Atlantic Cities program. As Florida notes in his piece "Why Cities Matter," he has long felt that our urban areas deserve "the same kind of media playing field that is regularly devoted to subjects like politics, business, entertainment, lifestyle and the rest." Florida and The Atlantic Cities program aim to provide this focus.

Echoing CNU 19 speaker and Truimph of the City author Ed Glaeser, Florida writes, "Cities are our greatest invention. They generate wealth and improve living standards while providing the density, interaction, and networks that make us more creative and productive. They are the key social and economic organizing units of our time, bringing together people, jobs, and all the inputs required for economic growth."

Cities are assuming their rightful mantel as great, good places. Cities are centers of economic and cultural opportunity, not pathology.

CNU 20 is the gathering ground to take these ideas and synthesize them into designs for long-lasting, valuable places.
